Charles Kilborn Post #58 American Legion
On the evening of September 20, 1920 fifteen World War I veterans gathered in the old carriage house opposite St. Joseph’s church and organized the Charles Kilborn Post #58 American Legion. Walter C. Harris was chosen the first post Commander. The post was named for Charles Cutting Kilborn, who died at Camp Yaphank, Long Island, NY on October 5, 1918, just four weeks to the day he left home. He was a native of Belmont and spent nearly all his life at his family’s farm off Bean Hill Road (Richard Perry farm).
For a number of years the organization occupied the building opposite the town hall on Fuller Street. This was sold in 1956 in anticipation of construction of new quarters but the project was later abandoned. The town later voted to allow the organization use of the old fire station in return for its upkeep and meetings have been held here since that time.
Over the years the American Legion has been active in patriotic causes and has never failed to place both a flag and a floral tribute on the grave of every Belmont veteran on Memorial Day
First Vietnam Casualty
PFC Jay A. Hurd, 19, of Belmont was killed in action in Vietnam, September 1, 1966, by a sniper’s bullet while returning to base with his unit from a combat mission. He was the first casualty of the Vietnam War from the Laconia Area.
